Getting Ready for Kindergarten: Independence Tip #4

Lunchtime can be a very busy part of our day. Once you have purchased your child’s lunch bag and litter-less containers for the year, consider spending some time unzipping the lunch bag, opening containers and unwrapping snacks. You can even pack your child’s lunch one day and allow him/her to use “opening and closing” skills in a functional way – to really have lunch.

Have a look at the following video for some samples of a child practising independence at lunchtime:

*Caution: If encouraging the child to use scissors as a strategy to encourage independence when opening wrappers, use child-friendly scissors and ensure the child knows how to use them. Safety first – we will have scissors available at school if children like to open wrappers with them 🙂

Enjoy practising!
